Religious Education
Aims and Objectives of Religious Education
At St Paul and St Timothy’s Catholic Infant School, Religious Education is at the heart of our curriculum. Guided by our mission, “Love, Learn, Believe, Achieve in the Spirit of Jesus,” we help children learn about God’s love, the life and teachings of Jesus, and what it means to live as part of a Catholic community.
Our aims are to help every child:
- Grow in knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith.
- Develop the language and confidence to talk about their learning.
- Wonder, reflect and respond to questions about God, faith and life.
- Learn about other religions and world-views with curiosity and respect.
- Understand how Jesus calls us to love others, care for creation and help those in need.
Religious Education is taught for at least 10% of curriculum time. Teachers plan lessons that enable all children to take part and make progress.
Learning in RE is enriched by prayer and liturgy, celebrations of the Church year, our links with the parish and opportunities to put faith into action. Children take part in activities such as Mini Vinnie’s, Little Faith Explorers and our Live Simply work, helping them discover how small acts of love and care can make a difference.
We work closely with families, our parish and the wider community.
At St. Paul and St. Timothy’s Catholic Infant School, we pride ourselves on the quality of teaching and the purposeful learning accessible to all our pupils during our Religious Education lessons. Religious Education plays a central and vital part of our curriculum and essentially, is at the heart of our teaching.
Religious Education Curriculum Statement
We follow the Religious Education Programme (RED) recommended by the Archdiocese of Liverpool, ‘To Know You More Clearly’, which is based on six branches taught in depth, with scripture at the heart of each lesson. It is an engaging, inspiring and motivating programme which challenges our pupils. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 explore Scripture, Catholic beliefs and traditions through stories, discussion, creative activities and reflection. They are encouraged to ask questions, share their ideas and make connections between what they learn and their own lives.
Throughout the school, each of the six branches have the same name to ensure children are able to make links to their prior learning as well as identify the different themes threaded throughout the school. The six branches are as follows:
- Creation and Covenant
- Prophecy and Promise
- Galilee to Jerusalem
- Desert to Garden
- To the Ends of the Earth
- Dialogue and Encounter
The structural elements of ‘To Know You More Clearly’ are split into three sections:
Understand, Discern and Respond enabling pupils to achieve a variety of aims and skills, which enables different ‘Ways of Knowing’ (exploring what they will see/ hear to help their understanding, how they will discover more, and what they can do now).
During lessons, we follow Hear, Believe, Celebrate and Live lenses enabling children to access and celebrate the curriculum in a variety of ways and ensuring it is at the heart of learning.
Throughout their school journey, pupils have the opportunity to explore different faiths and religions as part of this curriculum.
