Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching calls us to work together for the common good, build a fair and peaceful society, protect the dignity of every human life and stand alongside our brothers and sisters—especially those who are most vulnerable or in greatest need.

Rooted in Scripture and shaped by the teachings of the Catholic Church, Catholic Social Teaching is our moral compass. It helps us understand how to live out our faith through our words, choices and actions.

At St Paul and St Timothy’s Catholic Infant School, the principles of Catholic Social Teaching are woven throughout school life and reflect our mission:

“Love, Learn, Believe, Achieve in the Spirit of Jesus.”

Following the example of Jesus, we teach our children to love God, care for one another and look after our common home. We help them to recognise that every person is precious, loved by God and deserving of kindness, respect and dignity.

Children develop their understanding of Catholic Social Teaching through Religious Education, Prayer and Liturgy, assemblies, enrichment activities, pupil leadership and our wider curriculum. Through groups such as the Mini Vinnies, Faith Leaders and Eco Council, children are encouraged to put their faith into action by supporting people in need, caring for creation and contributing positively to their school and wider community.

Our children learn that, however young they may be, their actions can make a difference. By living simply, sustainably and in solidarity with others, we work together to bring God’s love, justice and peace into our world.

Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is rooted in Scripture, formed by the wisdom of Church leaders, and influenced by grassroots movements. It is our moral compass, guiding us on how to live out our faith in the world.

Our faith calls us to love God and to love our neighbours in every situation, especially our sisters and brothers living in poverty. Following in the footsteps of Christ, we hope to make present in our unjust and broken world, the justice, love and peace of God.

We use CAFOD’s 9 principles and introduce them through child friendly images which enables even the youngest children to understand the concept at their level.

In some of our assemblies we spend time reflecting on Sunday’s Gospel or issues that are arising in the world and discuss, contemplate and pray for guidance on identifying how CST can enable us to understand the outward show or action of our Catholic faith that will impact on many aspects of our life and, in turn, lead us to making an impact on the world so it can be as God intended it to be.
